Dustguard MC® : Dust Suppressant
Soil Stabilisation – Compaction Agent
A hygroscopic solution based on magnesium chloride, DUSTGUARD MC® is a bulk liquid delivered to the job site “ready to go”.
It requires no mixing or special preparation and is easily applied by watercart, either the customers or APS. Usually used upon trafficked areas such as roadways it acts as a compaction agent, stabiliser and dust suppressant.
DUSTGUARD MC® works primarily because it is hygroscopic, meaning it attracts and retains moisture.
The level of moisture retained by DUSTGUARD MC® achieves dust suppression and soil stabilisation in several ways. Firstly, DUSTGUARD MC® simply binds itself and water molecules to the surface fines making them heavier and less prone to lifting from the road by wind or traffic action. Secondly, as the magnesium chloride component of DUSTGUARD MC® penetrates the road surface it reduces and negative charge on the particles. This in turn reduces the particles tendency to repel each other and reduces the thickness of water coating the particles. This allows the particles to move closer together.
Thirdly, the surface tension of DUSTGUARD MC® is far greater than that of water. The higher surface tension reduces evaporation and combined with the thinner film coating the particles substantially increases the attraction between soil particles. As the binding ability of the road fines increases so does the road stability. The finer particles are retained in the road surface and lock the coarser aggregates into place.
